Why do some people feel the need to consistently make sock puppet accounts on Internet bulletin boards? It seems fundamentally dishonest to me. The purpose of such multiple & deceptive accounts can only really be known by their creators. I wonder why some make these accounts though. Is it for trolling or flaming? Who knows? I certainly find the practise of making sock puppet accounts decidedly underhand.

It's no business of mine, but these spats don't do much to improve the atmosphere here so I will insist that anyone involved be cheered up immediately. We used to have this little song when and where I grew up:

Are you mad?
Pick a rose,
Put it on your hat,
then you'll recompose.

(I took some liberties with the translation and changed the rhyming scheme a bit. Literally it goes: Are you angry?/ Pick a rose,/ Put it on your hat/ then tomorrow you're good again.)

Look at it.

That's definitely not a sock puppet. I'm not a sock puppet. But there you go ...

How about this one?

No one has answered the question yet as to why some people feel the need to create sock puppets. All of the cute puppies in the world cannot change the subject.

I have no idea why some people need to create sock puppets.
But I can knit my own woolly socks (and once knitted a pair as a gift to some other person ;-)

There are Internet zombies? OMG! Honestly though, what drives individuals to have multiple sock puppet accounts? It may be mental illness; akin to Multiple Personality Disorder. My guess is that it is fundamental dishonesty however.

A whole family of sock puppets! It's difficult to discern if any of them are mentally ill though.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a "call out" thread, because that would be very uncool.

To be fair, it is only sock-puppetry when someone posts from more than one account at the same time or in the same thread. There is nothing wrong with getting tired of one's screen name and changing it from time to time, and on many boards that involves opening a new account. When that happens, though, it really is considered good form to include a note in the signature line like "formerly known as…" and to disable the old account. Otherwise, it looks like someone has serious identity and reputation issues.

As to why, the typical reason is to make it look like one's point of view has broader support than is the case. I prefer real conversation and sharing with others, thank you very much.

Hmmm ... I am just genuinely interested in sock puppets. Thank you for your reply.
