Hi Alice.
It's all explained in my post of April 15 2015 - it started with a misprint in the "Official UK Civil Service Spelling Book" of 1868.
Then exacerbated by someone at Google Books who "corrected" the titles of all books containing the word "dilemma" d'oh! so if you search Google books, you find "dilemna" appears to be as common as the real spelling.
Brick wall Brick wall
How gauche!

Hippophobia - fear of horses.

Hi Drago,

I had always thought it was "dilemma" and had never heard about the "dilemna" (mis)spelling, so reading the posts in the "Spelling dilemna" topic was very interesting. You provided some great insights about it, including the history.

As for "gouache" - this is another word (fairly new to me) with an interesting etymology. It's spelled very much like "gauche" and "gaucho" but all three terms are unrelated to each other. The only other words I can think of that are spelled somewhat similarly but are terms for "stew" are "goulash" and "ragout" (possibly similar to "ratatouille").

I suppose we all have notions that we have to relearn, once we find out the real meaning, spelling, pronunciation, etc. I once thought "Socrates" was pronounced "So-crates" d'oh!

The exact opposite of my famous faux-pas. I thought Descartes was pronounced like Socrates and Eumenedes - Des-car-teez. Well, he's a philosopher isn't he? They all talk Greek!

Justificatiophobia - fear of having to think up an excuse after having been proved wrong.

Definitely a smart bear ("Smarter than the average bear, Boo Boo!")

"Zydeco" - that's a new one on me - Arcadian music ('Cajun) - I suppose a blend of West Indian, Hillbilly, Breton - plus a lot of originality.

'Acadian', no 'r', and it's more from blues than hillbilly, with West Indian & Breton. It's pretty lively stuff, you should check it out.
