I put my suggestion to the committee, but they unanimously disagreed with it.

When an Italian woman, Claudia Moretti, inherited her uncle's home, she was thrilled to discover it contained a safe, which, itself, contained 100 million lires in cash. But what even is a lire? Before the euro was adopted in 2002, the lire was Italy's form of currency. Unfortunately for Moretti, the adoption of the euro came with a proviso that after December 6, 2011, any remaining lire would be un-exchangeable. In other words, Moretti's find was worth nothing: a worthless treasure.

Last night, I dreamed I was an atheist bishop in Edinburgh. I was not unique. To me, religion was just a tool. The individual or collective outcome was what really mattered to me. I was results-oriented that way.

Then I woke up.

Chopin can evoke deep feelings by minimal changes of harmony; his music is intensely subtle.

They agreed it was tonight only - and they would never meet again.
Then they made unsentimental love and said goodbye.

As we look back to that momentous year 2020, we see that the government's advice to 'stay home' was a catastrophic success — everyone stayed home and the economy was ruined.

The formation process of a monochromatic rainbow is identical to that of a normal rainbow (namely the reflection/refraction of light in water droplets), the difference being that a monochrome rainbow requires the sun to be close to the horizon, i.e. near sunrise or sunset.

There was a violent serenity when the guns suddenly fell silent at the Armistice in 1918.

You're calling me a "cynical philanthropist"?

It's a fact philanthropists’ motives have long been distrusted. Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement that he was giving $45bn to charity was called a ‘big joke’ by the economist Thomas Piketty. In the UK, donors to academy schools have been accused of donating to make money out of privatising schools. The Giving Pledge, which was designed by Bill Gates to encourage others to give, was accused by Forbes of being a tax scheme or a publicity stunt.

I do not play in the same league.

"It turns out that a smooth friction law with a very steep slope in place of the discontinuity can produce nearly sticking effects ... True stick-slip cannot take place with the smooth friction model."

The born-again preacher had a kind of overbearing humility – he would get on his knees, clasp his hands, look heavenwards, and wail theatrically: "We are all miserable sinners who deserve to burn in Hell!"

In their album "Under A Frozen Sun" (2011), Thulcandra is deeply rooted in the infamous sound of Sweden's black death metal, which combines scorching riffs, anthemic melodies, delicate solos supported by driving drums, and intense vocal renditions.

Compared to Ed Strangler and the Screaming Nuns, the latest song from Thin Lizzie is a relatively peaceful commotion.

Is a Pyrrhic defeat the time you got knocked out and were considered the loser - but your oponent died of his injuries the next day?
