Hello everyone!

Is there an idiom or saying, when the result of a competition was different from the expected? I can't think of anything Brick wall

In sports, a common phrase is "they pulled off an upset." Or similarly, "It was a major upset," "There was a major upset today."
In a broader context, "It was a jaw-dropper." Used for sports, but also in politics, "His win was a jaw-dropper," "Pulling out of the race was a jaw-dropper," or in social situations, "Seeing Mary with a loser like John was a jaw-dropper."

Also to pull a stunner, to stun, used often in sports.

How about: "That came out of left field." 'That' being whatever was a surprise or was, otherwise, unexpected.

That was a turn up for the books.

This originates from a race being won by a horse that the 'bookmaker' had no record of in his book. He had a 'turn up' (unexpected good fortune) and kept all the wagered money.

For anything that occurs totally unexpectedly, you can use 'A Bolt from the Blue' - it can be good or bad.
