A few observations on the Worlds and the NHL playoffs:

1. Game seven between the Caps and Rangers tonight! Can't wait.

2. Finland continues to roll, USA struggles to win games but struggle. USA has Finland and Sweden coming up. Unless they elevate their game to the level of their competition, it could be ugly!

3. NHL Western Conference Final is Kings v. Coyotes. I know that I get in trouble for this, but, these are two teams that play in the desert. I know little of them due to the time difference, and also, I still find it hard to get excited for ice hockey teams that play in the desert.

USA 5-0 over Finland?

I never would have predicted this in a thousand years.

Your thoughts, J.J.? I honestly thought the Finns were unstoppable.

The games against Canada and USA were not exactly what we would have liked. But that's sports, isn't it?
USA and Finland will most probably play again in quarter final game. Then we'll see ;-)

Well said J.J.

I had figured Finland for some nasty cold vengeance today.

My first chance to check the score was at lunch, during the second period. Yes, I could check at other times, but, IT certainly is watching what we are doing (he knows if we've been naughty, you see).

So, I kept to the IT discipline. I squinted...looked with just one eye...and it was 0 to 0.

Imagine my relief! I'd expected to see Finland 6 USA 1 or some obscene result.

Later, after normal hours, I went and checked and learned that the Finns had won with 9 seconds left. I was grateful that the USA didn't embarass themselves. I was equally disappointed at the oh-so-close result!

But, as you said, wait. And, the better team did emerge.

I'm going to cheer Finland on for a repeat. Good luck!

Congrats to the Medalists in the Worlds:

Gold to Russia

Silver to Slovakia

Bronze to the Czechs...

Condolences to Finland for falling just short. Also, imagine if the Czech and Slovak Republics were still joined. What a team they'd have had this year!

In the NHL:

Admittedly, I don't follow the Western Conference much, but, did anyone see the L.A. Kings coming? Wow, they are the first team ever to win their first 8 road games in a row in the playoffs. They can sit back and watch Jersey and NY struggle with each other.

This time the gold went to the best time in this tournament, no doubt. Ten clear wins, no ties, no losses.
The next six teams won each other and lost to each other with no clear plan.
That's sports ;-)

Next year same arenas and better luck for the losers!

....And then there were two: L.A. Kings v. N.J. Devils.

Both play hockey the way you win in the playoffs: goaltending, tight checking, blocking shots, grind in the corners, discipline.

It will be interesting.
