Hi! What does the quote of the day: "The happiest women, like the happiest nations, have no history" mean?

Yes, bad memory; It looks like the quotation "Gentlemen have no memory" referring to not
to speak about his love-stories.

Dream Chaser,

Traditionally women were supposed to be private individuals and not to have a public image. Certainly they were not supposed to act in a way that would bring them public attention - this would gain them a "reputation" and a women with a reputation was shunned by society.

Thus, nothing was supposed to be known about a woman - i.e. she had no history. Eliot lived in the time when America was just beginning to be an independant entity and thus had no history either - so it could write its own which, it was hoped, wpuld be a good one.

Her quote was, one suspects, written tongue-in-cheek considering who she was!
