we have had the best of guitars, piano and collaborations, but nothing on the most basic instrument - the human voice

(as far as I know; apologies if I am repeating a thread}

so I will start off with a couple (and none of them is Mongolian throat, singing, yet!)

Hallelujah (Handel, not Beck!)

Eivør Pálsdóttir

but my experience here is very limited, so I need some inspiration: I am sure there are much better voices out there... any suggestions??

(and no, she is not Icelandic, she is Faroese! )

JJ, I love the Sami music.Applause

Must say, though, if I did not know it was Sami, I could easily have taken it for native American.
Maybe it is a deep basic human style, because even though they may be nomadic I cannot think the culture would be unchanged and undivergent all the way across to China and America!

another one, an oldie:
Paul Robeson

I have yet to check out JJ's others, and ex's, but they look pretty eclectic!

I love the beautiful contralto voice of Kathleen Ferrier. She died young of breast cancer in the early 1950's and I can remember feeling profoundly sad that she was taken before her time. She was a Lancashire lass. I tried to do a link for you but was unable to get it to work. I hope some of you will be interested enough to seek her out on YouTube where there are several recordings.

Hi Cass - Here's one of Kathleen Ferrier's songs. Yes, very beautiful. (I tried to find one with overall good recording quality/sound, etc.)

great fun going through these Applause

Beethoven - singing with clout!

lots of good new stuff, and a few I thought I knew sounding better than I thought

- Leonard Cohen,
and you are right, the Sutherland 'Viens, Mallika!' is sublime Shhh

I just love this song, I have no idea what is says but it just always gets me!

Bonga - mona ki ngi xica

(he is from Angola - some background, from album notes:)
Quote:

"Mona Ki Ngi Xica," sung in Kimbundu, comes from Bonga's first album, released in 1972. The record's subversive lyrics earned a warrant for Bonga's arrest, and he traveled back and forth continually between Belgium, Germany and France until Angola's independcnce was declared in 1975. He now lives and records in Portugal and his repertoire embraces all of Portuguese-speaking Africa.

I didn't know it was subversive until I found this, while searching for a video of it to post, but I suppose that would have been a good guess!

Hi Cass, I've just recently found about Alfie Boe while watching musicals on youtube. He's very good.

I looked up Judi Dench the other day (thanks, JJ!). I didn't know she's a singer; I've seen her in the latest Bond movies. When I was a kid there was a free TV channel that sometimes feature old films, sometimes musicals. I didn't like songs where the singer kind of talks and sings. I mean the 'talking' part being part of the song - usually sad songs. Now I appreciate it.

I like how this song (Send in the Clowns) was sang by these two artists:

Judi Dench

Barbara Streisand

An artist I liked very much because he could really
use his voice like an instrument is Al Jarreau.

One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, she is Serbian and sings only Serbian Orthodox music.
Divna Ljubojevic - Veliko Slavoslovije

I can always listen to these two people, together and separately.
Freddie Mercury, Montserrat Caballé - Barcelona

I'm a good singer and I tried to sing along but soon felt ostracized as if not measuring up to certain expectations and after my second attempt I felt like an unwelcomed pariah who fell far short of accepted standards set forth by your Icelandic community and as I attempted the third I was soon overcome with this overwhelming feeling of self-loathing that swept over me like a raging tsunami that forced me out of my seat as I ran to the lavatory in tears and in disgrace but couldn't even bring myself to look in the mirror at this utter failure as hard as I did try. However, I did find some comfort and solace while sitting on the commode recovering my self respect and dignity. Is that the best you can do? How cold natured you Icelanders must be!

Thanks, my day can only get much better now...

I must confess to a profound dislike for the male operatic voice. I had to discreetly unload one such Christmas present to a charity shop.

SilvatungdaViel - I am sorry if I question your motives or truthfulness, but I doubt there is a sinlge people on Earth who do not appreciate people singing with them. Given your strange posts in the TV theme thread, I am not sure if you are politically motivated, or just had a personal crisis. But hating and maligning people is just sad. Boo hoo!
I really hope you find what you want.

Dude (or Dudess), there shouldn't have been any question at all that I was trying to find some humor in your post given the fact that you were asking members of an English language speaking forum to sing along to songs most, if not all, have never heard and in a language that perhaps none speak as if universal in order to make us all feel good. Ironic, how I thought you were trying to be funny to which I was likewise trying to respond with humor to which you respond with insults but then perhaps you're one of those rare individuals like myself who finds it inspiring and uplifting to sit on their bathroom throne.

BANG! Again, since you readily found humor in that
