1. Over the last ten years, I was in hospital nine times.
2. Over the last ten years, I have been in hospital nine times.

Do the sentences mean I was hospitalised nine times? If so, which is the correct sentence?

This is BrE, but, yes, I would understand it to mean you were hospitalized nine times. Both are okay. The first says you had this experience in the past. The second says you possess this experience as a completed action.
