The first five-hundred years...

Should the hyphen be removed?

Thanks!

No, the hyphen should not be removed.
The Farlex Grammar lessons include information on this. I trust you can find it on your own.

Thanks, Wilmar.

What if it is "The first five-hundred-year period"?

Should the hyphens be removed?

"Five-hundred-year" is a compound adjective describing the "period".
In your first sentence "five-hundred" is a compound number describing "years". It's a three-figure number (it is not between twenty and a hundred).

The hyphens rules are here.
