Vividly witnessing these conditions before his eyes, the Daishonin composed this document to bring salvation to the people through Buddhism.

Should it be "Witnessing vividly..." instead?

Thanks!

Why? Do you have a grammatical basis for that suggestion?

Either "Witnessing vividly" or "Vividly witnessing" is fine.

If you wish to emphasize the word "vividly", the present sentence is better. Grammatically, both the original sentence and your suggestion are okay. Personally, I prefer the original sentence.

To me, the word vividly doesn't fit into the sentence in either suggested location. How does one "vividly witness" something? Or "witness vividly"? It doesn't seem to fit. Can you describe what image you are trying to paint?

Since he is composing a document after witnessing the conditions, it seems to me he should be "vividly recalling/vividly remembering" the conditions he saw.
