On the BBC Radio Four news, it was stated that cameraphones were used to record an incident.

Surely it is more accurate to say Phone Cameras? When I buy a smart phone, I want a phone first, with the camera as a bonus. If I was buying a camera, I wouldn't expect it to be able to make phone calls!

No camera phone or cameraphone is the accepted term in English.
They were invented before smart phones existed, a phone in which the defining feature is it has a camera this was before smart phones did a bit of everything.
It’s not an ordinary phone it’s a camera phone, that was the novelty value of them.
