One is longer and unnecessarily complex.


"To say" is not the same as "to tell".

But "to say something to someone" is the same as telling them that.
Unless it is something like 'he said hello to me'. Which is reporting the words, and is not what he "told" you.

In reported speech, sentence 2 is the preferred choice. In multiple choice questions, if the second sentence is not an option and the first sentence is one of the options provided, it can be marked correct.
