Hi,

Do "so" and "that's why" have the same meaning in the following?

Peter wants to go home early, so he worked as fast as he could.
Peter wants to go home early. That's why he worked as fast as he could.

I'd appreciate your help.

Yes.
As a conjunction it is used to mean that.

So
Quote:

1.
and for this reason; therefore.
"it was still painful so I went to see a specialist"

2.
with the aim that; in order that.
"they whisper to each other so that no one else can hear"
