If I understand you correctly, the clause is referring to the "arguments". The "lenses" are simply the points of view through which the arguments are criticized.

A ridiculous sentence!
I often see badly structured sentences. The author seems to believe that distance between the relative clause and the noun or noun phrase it modifies is a measure of their mastery of English.
