Latin
linō (present infinitive linere, perfect active lēvī, supine litum); third conjugation
I daub, besmear, anoint
Suffix -mentum (plural -menta)
instrument, medium, or result of; e.g. monumentum
I always find it odd when a medicine is called topical. Like it is in the news! But this is the original meaning of topos - topology, topography - topical medicine= you put it in that place, where you have the problem.
From Latin topica, from Ancient Greek τοπικός (topikós, “pertaining to a place, local, pertaining to a common place, or topic, topical”), from τόπος (tópos, “a place”).
