The tail. For historical reasons, some parts of an aircraft have retained French names - but empennage is not a common word in English, outside the aviation world. Quote:fuselage = long and narrow, tapering at both ends.
Etymology Borrowed from French fuselage, from fuselé (“spindle-shaped”), from Old French *fus (“spindle”), from Latin fusus (“spindle”). So named for its shape; in English since 1909. Quote:empennage
The tail assembly of an aircraft. The feathers of an arrow or the tail fins of a bomb or rocket used to stabilize the longitudinal axis of the projectile parallel to the flight path.
French empennage (“feathers of an arrow”) Like a pen, which used to be made from a feather. So an aeroplane is a spindle with fletching feathers at the back. In the example sentence I think they mean the tail fin - the vertical stabiliser. Not the whole empennage.
