Egress - going out
Progress - going forward
Regress - going back
Digress - going a second way
Congress - going with
Transgress - going across (the line)


-gress comes from the active participle of gradior - to step, to go

gradior (present infinitive gradī, perfect active gressus sum);

So that is the root of -grade
Prograde, retrograde
