I disagree because money is always moreish. And some people never contend.
I have been a big fan of Daniel Defoe but reading the quote, I am quite disappointed by him.
It was very naive of him to say so.

That's a nice thought that ought to be true. But for some who are very wealthy, they find out that the money does not fill their emptiness, and then they go for power over others.
