June 28, 1914, Sarajevo, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and Franz Ferdinand's wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg.

World War I started one month later, on July 28, 1914.

I heard this so many times in my history classes.

What always gets to me is that, for most of the world who heard that some foreign Duke & his wife had been murdered, it didn't mean anything other than a far-distant tragedy. Ghastly for their families and friends, of course, but nothing to do with the rest of the world in little towns & villages in the Somme, or in Gallipoli, in Megiddo or Ypres.

Most of them had no idea that this action was their death sentence. (And I guess if Fox News had been about then, millions of Americans never would have heard anything about it at allDancing )

So that, often, when some news comes in about some sort of drama in the world, I wonder where it will lead to eventually.
