The word is usually found in texts on geology. But can also be found in fiction: Quote:The frame of the white man, judging by such parts as were not concealed by his clothes, was like that of one who had known hardships and exertion from his earliest youth. His person, though muscular, was rather attenuated than full; but every nerve and muscle appeared strung and indurated by unremitted exposure and toil.
The Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper
This book is on my list to read as is Billy Budd, by Herman Melville, which also features this word. -

Indurate is a technical/scientific expression, and is elegantly accurate where that is appropriate. In general literatture, obdurate is more appropriate

Of those 'similar words' only the words with 'dur' are similar. The others just have an -ate ending in common. Dur- = hard/long endure, indurate, obdurate, durable During, duration
Epidural, subdural, as in epidural injection, subdural hematoma - on top of or under the membrane called the dura mater - Quote:from Medieval Latin dura mater cerebri (literally “hard mother of the brain”), a loan translation of Arabic أُمّ الدِّمَاغ الصَفِيقَة (ʾumm ad-dimāḡ aṣ-ṣafīqa, literally “thick mother of the brain, matrix of the brain”).
