Hello,

Quote:

Specifically, a delusion of grandeur is a person’s belief that they are someone other than who they are, such as a supernatural figure or a celebrity.

Is the phrase 'they are someone' grammatical or not.
Is the 'someone' in the singular or in the plural?

Thank you.

It would be better to replace "a delusion of grandeur is a person's belief that they are someone other than who they are" with something like "You are said to have a delusion of grandeur when you have an unshakeable belief that you have more power, wealth, smarts, or other grand traits than you actually do."

They is the ungendered singular pronoun. It takes the normal verb ending 'they are' whatever its meaning.

(If you have grammar books, or grammar teachers, saying 'they' is the the incorrect pronoun for a singular person, then those books are wrong. That has been a standard part of English grammar for at least 800 years).

The number of the complement doesn't matter.

'someone' is singular. But it is not the subject of the verb.

A deliusion of grandeur is someone's belief that they are very important.

A person in my office has delusions of grandeur. They believe that they are very important and expect me to how down before them.

When 'someone' is the subject it is singular.
Someone is coming.

..the belief that they are someone [who is] important

But here 'they' is the subject.
'someone [who is] other than they are' is the complement.
That is a clause that includes another 'they are'.
