Vauxhall Bridge Opens in London (1906)

Vauxhall Bridge is an arch bridge over the River Thames in central London. Despite its public garden and location, the Vauxhall area was sparsely populated before the 19th century, and a plan for a bridge there was hatched in 1809 to help develop the area. The resulting bridge was in terrible shape by the end of the century, however, and construction on a new, richly decorated, steel-and-granite replacement began in 1898. From when you complemented engineering and aesthetics without building something ridiculous just to be noticed.

VAUXHALL BRIDGE has outstanding architectural significance for the work by sculptors Alfred Drury RA and Frederick Pomeroy RA which adorns the piers. The work is not only unique - no other British river crossing contains sculpture - but also of a very high quality. The design of the bridge, the work of two engineers of considerable significance, is also of note and the piers carry a superstructure of remarkable elegance given the breadth of the carriageway above. Furthermore, Vauxhall Bridge is sited near a group of listed buildings and has group value with Lambeth Bridge of 1929 .
