Memorable and original lines – from classic to quirky

For a starter, this is from an Irish standup comedian in the 1980s:

Not that we cared much what he said.
He could have stood on his head...
in a bucket...
reciting the rosary...
backwards...
in Japanese...
for all that we cared.

The ground of this popular practice might be the common opinion
Concerning the virtue prognostic of halcyons,
The natural regard they have unto the winds,
And they unto them again, more especially remarking in the time of their nidulation, and bringing forth "their young".

- Thomas Browne. (1605 -- 1682)

For my own share one beauty I design,
Engage your honours that she shall be mine.

- Dryden.

The moving finger writes and, having writ,
Moves on, nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line
Nor all thy tears wash out one word of it.

“What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.”

That quote is Christopher Hitchens's from a 2003 Slate article. It actually is a near translation of the Latin phrase “Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur” (“What is asserted gratuitously may be denied gratuitously”) which is anonymous and which has been in wide usage since the 19th century.

"The problems of language here are really serious. We wish to speak in some way about the structure of the atoms. But we cannot speak about atoms in ordinary language.

It is not surprising that our language should be incapable of describing the processes occurring within the atoms, for -- as this has been remarked -- it was invented to describe the experiences of daily life, and these experiences consist only of processes involving exceedingly large numbers of atoms.

Furthermore, it is very difficult to modify our language so that it will be able to describe the atomic processes, for words can only describe things of which we can form mental pictures, and this ability, too, is a result of daily experience.

Fortunately, mathematics is not subject to this limitation, and it has been possible to invent a mathematical scheme — the quantum theory — which seems entirely adequate for the treatment of atomic processes. For visualization, however, we must content ourselves with two incomplete analogies: the wave picture and the corpuscular picture."

There are two ways to slide easily through life:
to believe everything or doubt everything.
Both ways save us from thinking.

“The barrier during self-improvement is not so much that we hate learning, rather we hate being taught. To learn entails that the knowledge was achieved on one's own accord - it feels great - but to be taught often leaves a feeling of inferiority. Thus it takes a bit of determination and a lot of humility in order for one to fully develop.”

― Criss Jami, in Killosophy
