SARS-CoV-2 resulting in the disease termed COVID-19 belongs to a large family of viruses called Coronaviruses. Coronaviruses also include SARS-CoV-1 (SARS) and MERS-CoV (MERS). These viruses are zoonotic viruses meaning they mainly circulate among certain animals and that via some genetic mutations they start to infect humans. If you remember, SARS-CoV-1 was circulating among civet cats in China and MERS-CoV among camels in the Middle East before they started to infect humans. The same applies to SARS-CoV-2 virus which is thought by some experts to have started spreading among pangolins in China before developing some mutations that resulted in its ability to infect humans.
For some reason, infected children with SARS-CoV-2 tend to have mild symptoms. Chinese reports indicate that only 2% of COVID-19-related hospitalizations were children and adolescents. As children are considered to have a relatively weaker immune system in comparison with adults and are known to suffer from several infections both viral and bacterial that rarely occur in adults I cannot help asking the question why this is not the case with COVID-19. Any thoughts?

There are likely many contributing reasons why the young don’t suffer as much as the elderly. Here are a few of those reasons.

Our lungs are incredibly flexible, especially when we are young. With each breath, cells in our lungs secrete a surfactant that helps keep the tissues moist, and slippery, preventing the lung tissue from “sticking” together. Even a deep sigh can trigger the release of this surfactant.

A young person is usually more physically active, which keeps the lungs functioning better. The flexible cartilage part of the rib cage makes inhaling and exhaling better, deeper, and easier.

Also, a young person’s immune system is generally quick to respond to invasive bacteria and viruses, and may react quicker than that of the elderly. Another factor is that in older people, repeated occasions of infections can leave scar tissue in the lungs (fibrosis), making them less efficient in gas exchange. This is especially true for those who have had serious infections, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis.

The flexibility of the lungs diminishes with age. This is natural. With less flexibility, it becomes harder to breathe and takes more energy. Older people tend to be less active, and therefore breathe shallower. Another factor is that with age, there is a decrease in surfactant production. With age there is also the decrease in the flexibility of the cartilage of the ribs. This makes expansion of the lungs more difficult.

With shallower breathing, less surfactant, stiffness in the rib cartilage, and less activity, infection of the lungs means an increased chance that mucus production to fight the infection will be harder to expel. When the lungs fill ever more with infection and mucus, less oxygen is available. A spiral of decrease begins. The body systems begin to suffer as oxygen is essential for energy production and the well-being of the body. Fever may develop in order to try to kill the virus, but the appetite is usually affected and the older person, whose appetite may already have diminished from less activity, doesn’t want to eat as they might ordinarily. If the infection isn’t brought under control quickly, the declining spiral may accelerate as a result of the age-related factors, and bring things to an end for the infected person.

Dear Foundit:

Thank you for posting that response as it was extremely clear and to the point. As someone living in China and going through this right now I also want to stress how important it is for people to not panic, follow the rules and guidelines from the CDC, and mostly practice "social" distancing for now. That has proven to be effective in this fight.

Remember the mantra..."No one needs your germs!" Whistle

I have been back to China since Feb. 6th and as of yesterday my Province was officially virus free. We only had 93 known cases, and only 1 death and as of yesterday everyone else recovered. Now the trick will be to remain virus free.

I hope other countries will learn from China and follow the protocol. It took us 60 days to achieve this status, so be prepared. This is not going away tomorrow, but it will go away then it will be up to us to keep it gone. Together we can do it. Applause

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can strengthen your body’s natural defenses.
Antioxidants are molecules that boost the immune system. They do so by protecting cells from harmful molecules called free radicals.
When free radicals accumulate, they can promote a state known as oxidative stress, which has been linked to many chronic diseases (3Trusted Source).
Studies show that consuming more vitamin C can increase your blood antioxidant levels by up to 30%. This helps the body’s natural defenses fight inflammation.
people look to a vitamin C flush when they want rapid detoxification or to recover quickly from an illness.
People who recommend a vitamin C flush as a detox method claim that it:
• boosts the body’s vitamin C stores
• determines how much vitamin C the body needs every day
• leaves the body feeling refreshed and energized
Vitamin C is believed to:
• have anti-aging properties
boost the immune system
• help the body absorb minerals
• protect the body from chemical toxins
• help the body ward off infection

Vitamins help prevent cancer.

We're getting regular updates about the truths and hoaxes around Covid-19 as a lot of fearmongering is being spread on social media. There I've learned that there is no medical proof that vitamin C slows down or cures Covid-19. While it's important for our bodies, it has no impact on this specific virus. You can find more about that in this article.

Important to note, if you do have Covid-19, try to avoid taking Ibuprofin. While there are no medical studies yet, but there are cases in which non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids can lead to complications. The Belgian federal agency for medication and medical issues recommends using paracetamol first.

The body can only metabolise so much Vitamin C at a time, most people get enough from their diet taking supplements is not that helpful.

On the other had I cannot metabolise dietary Vitamin B-12 at all and need regular injections of it to stay healthy, one of the things it helps in is the production of white blood cells part of the immune system. So I am now on 4 months lockdown in the UK to try to avoid getting ill.

It seems like something that ranges from yellow number five to graphite number nine.
