Obama managed to box in and economically strangle both Russia and Iran without ever firing a shot.

Trump has singlehandedly undone all of that; resuscitated their influence; and endangered American interests in return for absolutely nothing, except that
Trump's got his headlines moved from impeachment: Three thousand troops to middle east - is the US at war with Iran without telling Congress, allies, or UN?

Prez + military. Where have we heard about that before?

The man killed was a monster, but the consequences of the strike will play out for years - we hope.

All the big tough guys who never served a day in the military, or had a job that would never see combat - Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, and Trump family are the ones beating the war drum loudest.

Trump's tweets from 2013 have not aged well. The only thing he is consistent about is his name calling and bullying.

The President must get Congressional approval before attacking Syria-big mistake if he does not!

To my fellow Canadians. Just in case you didn't know or you have forgotten we do have 800 Canadian troops in the line of fire. From what I have been told, "they" are now trying to get them out safely so as to not draw attention.

Canada was NOT informed about the impending attack. Typical Trump WH. Cares for nobody but himself.

President Trump said his decision to kill Major-General Qassem Soleimani, one of the most powerful men in Iran, was not meant as a provocation.

Yeah, right, it was only the equivalent of killing Pence.

little donny's a f*#king moron. He thinks he can bully Iran in the same way he bullies his business associates. Iran will likely retaliate via a cyber attack. Russia has already demonstrated how vulnerable we are. The CIA should take little donny on a one way flight and leave him in the middle of the African savanna.

Hi Oscar.

WH said that Russia and Mar a Lago buddies were told in advance of the attack on Iran, but Congress wasn't because of Impeachment. And as I said earlier, neither were allies with troops in the area. In fact Trump governs unilaterally and doesn't ask Congress for anything except money. He's been doing whatever he wants with no consequences by Republicans and Republican senate.

The reason a smart president consults Congress is not as a favor to Congress. It's to share responsibility in case things go wrong, as they so often do. What if Trump needs to ask Congress for money or troops in 2020?

Americans must be tired of being lied to by their governments about the need to go to war - Vietnam, Iraq, and now this. The Iranian general has been causing problems for years but was ignored so as not to cause war. I'm sure hardly anybody even knew his name.

I wonder why six top Pentagon officials resigned in December. They must have known something was up.

https://www.defensenews.com/pentagon/2019/12/18/top-defense-exports-official-exits-the-pentagon-amid-multiple-recent-resignations/

Iraqui militia has also been attacked. Iraq mission has been cancelled by NATO.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/nato-training-iraq-mission-suspended-1.5415166

This is only going to add to the cycle of violence, making it a more dangerous world.

Digressions but still about Trump:

Guardian says Trump's children are being groomed for 2024 president and vice president. Whoopee.

The following is also a partial summary of the opinion editorial piece Jan 4, 2020 Toronto Star. "Promise and Peril for 2020".

It mentions the book, "Superforecasting, the Art and Science of Prediction" that has some good ideas for all of us.

The biases of human neural wiring "convince us we know things we really don't. We are too quick to make up our minds and and too slow to change them."

The wish is that the new year would bring more critical thinking so we are beware of claims and information designed to be incendiary and emotional, as emotion usually wins.

Also to beware of leaders promising a return to some golden age of prosperity or human goodness. No one can stop history - the only constant is change.

To beware of experts who didn't see something coming but who can explain almost immediately why it happened.

The future is unknowable so promises of what leaders will do should be ignored.

Weighing character and track records works better.

Beware the person who has "One Book", the leader who claims to be the only one to have the answer because that answer is usually of tunnel vision and narrow focus. The real test is in dealing with the unforeseeable.

Thinking, gathering information, being self critical, open-minded, careful, curious, having focus, are good habits of thought and lead to real critical thinking and the ability to update your beliefs.

The editorial ends with:

"May we bring the best of us to the challenge of our times".

High Hope, I only occasionally drop into this forum as I find the level of divisiveness distressing and feel like the vitriol that goes on here has done much to drag down the forum in general; however, this quote you referenced could not be truer and it baffles me that people are not taking it into consideration.

Iran mourns death of Soleimani, prepares for retaliation.

In A Day Of Turmoil, Repercussions Of Soleimani Killing Grow More Widespread

https://www.npr.org/2020/01/05/793746580/iraqi-parliament-votes-to-expel-u-s-troops-from-country-in-wake-of-soleimani-str

Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike on Friday, ratcheting up tensions between Tehran and Washington and prompting vows of retaliation from top Iranian leaders.

In Iran's parliament, lawmakers chanted "Death to America!" in unison — a development that followed Trump's warning that the U.S. would target 52 "high level & important" Iranian sites in the event that Iran retaliates.

Amid the fallout of the U.S. drone strike on Friday that killed Soleimani, Sunday saw the following whiplash-inducing developments unfold almost simultaneously:

· The Iraqi parliament voted to oust the thousands of U.S. service members stationed in Iraq.

· President Trump threatened Baghdad with sanctions if U.S. forces were forced to leave the country.

· The U.S. military announced that it would halt its fight against ISIS in Iraq.

· Iranian state television reported that Iran would no longer abide by the limits of the 2015 nuclear deal.

· Hundreds of thousands of mourners packed Iran's streets to pay respect to Soleimani.

2016: ISIS nearly defeated, Iraq US ally, Kurds US ally,
Iran no nuclear program, Middle East stable, Iranians demonstrating against theocracy.

2020: ISIS resurgent, Iraq expels the US & allies with Iran,
Kurds hate US, a united Iran at war with the US.

Republicans busy selling the strike to themselves.

Allies such as UK, Canada, etc. have not said a word of support.

Winning. All that winning by a man controlled by his anger.

Oh yeah, he's a real winner now, eh?

Tonight an American base was bombed. Of course.

Ask anybody on any street in the world about that and they'd just say "Well d'uh".

Because everybody - from the leaders of all the Developed countries, to the "allies" who have been insulted, spurned and ignored, to the farmer in their fields, and the factory workers, to local MPs; everybody KNEW that would happen.

How could it not - given the history of the region, the regional and international alliances that exist, and what's been happening since 2016, and the temperament and culture of Iran, and the values of the principal players in the region...and just common-fucken-sense!...how could nobody ensure that this uneducated, amoral oaf also knew it?

Ah well, there's nothing now that one can do about it: but dear gods - what kind of a government has none of the "checks & balances" to stop a deranged old man putting every man, woman and child in his own country not just at risk, but as surefire targets? And opens the door for the rest of the world to hurtle into WW3 for nothing more than desperation for a few more votes?

Mr. Trump, after the strike, told associates he was under pressure to deal with Gen. Soleimani from GOP senators he views as important supporters in his coming impeachment trial in the Senate, associates said.

And a plane load of innocent people are dead because of his actions. Edit: I see where some Canadians are saying the Republicans/Trump supporters have Canadian blood on their hands.

Impeachment talk gone sideways. Trump calls ALL Democrats vicious horrible people. Is that worse than half of Trump supporters being "deplorable"? lol

Political and Sickening but goals achieved by Trump at the expense of innocents who are "just" collateral damage.

Added to the blood of all the children who have died in kindergartens, schools, universities, drive-by's, mass shootings, border concentration camps, measles, hunger, and lack of medical treatment; I'd think it would be more than their hands that are covered. And that's before one even begins to count the adults!
