[o]n this day there was to be a merrymaking in Mr Wilson's house in honour of Major Steuart's birthday; and that after the repast, and in presence of some members of the family and one guest, Mrs Kellet, it is said that Major Steuart solemnly acknowledged the pursuer to be his wife ... and the evening ended by some of those present seeing the couple put to bed, and pelting them with pillows.

from Old French
Quote:
Old French
Noun
repast m (oblique plural repaz or repatz, nominative singular repaz or repatz, nominative plural repast)

a meal
Descendants
→ English: repast
French: repas

from
Latin pascere - to graze (as in sheep eating grass)

It seems to be a word that needs context, given its rather conflicting meanings!

Quote:
pāscō (present infinitive pāscere, perfect active pāvī, supine pāstum); third conjugation

I feed, nourish, maintain, support.
I pasture, drive to pasture, attend.
I feed, supply, cultivate, let grow
(of animals) I graze, browse
(figuratively) I feast, delight, satisfy, feed, gratify
I consume, lay waste, ravage, desolate

pastoral - of the countryside
pastor - shepherd - religious leader

antipasto - before the meal
