If my teachers had modeled how to incorporate ideas and details into writing, using real writing instead of the drill-and-kill approach, I would have been much more motivated and engaged to try it on my own.

Please explain the use of "would have been much more motivated..."

When do we use the structure "would have been "?

hello,
it is the sentence with the condition in the past. there are three possibilities to express the condition: in the present,in the past and in the future. this is the second case.

You may want to review the "Subjunctive Mood" here: https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Subjunctive-Mood.htm
