The reputation of Egyptian physicians...
(...) Before these physicians could prescribe any treatment, they had to make diagnosis by employing their powers of observation and experience in determining the nature of illness. He would then refer to the medical papyri to determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Normally this would take the form of an unguent comprised from natural ingredients. In treatment of illnesses drugs were administered and mechanical procedures included incantations to drive out demons. Amulets could ward off illnesses of most kind, but serious mental disorders required the exorcism of demons.

Unguent

That sometimes sticky or greasy salve you put on cuts or rashes is also called an unguent. Whether it's a cream or a gel, the main purpose of an unguent is to heal or protect a sore.

I've always preferred the term "unction," myself.
