The word 'malefic' in the beginning of the 19th century was written as 'malefick'. The abbreviation adj. malef-, can be understood as adjustment in the meaning of modification malef-.

I have found "malef" as applicable in the example of sentence using a word 'gallow'. The word "gallow" was used by some in the singular, but by more only in the plural, or even sometimes has/had another plural "gallowses". It is allegedly from "galga" in Gothick; "galge" in Dutch. Some people derive it from "gabalus, furca" in Latin; others from "high" in Hebrew.
'A beam laid over two posts, on which malefactors are hanged.'

The word "malefactor" was used also by Shakespeare in his Anthony and Cleopatra, where he was describing a jailer,
'This is a jailer, to bring forth
Some monstrous malefactor.'
