"louver" or "louvre"?
It's a french word, so should be spelt "louvre". The similarity with the legendary Paris Gallery "La Louvre" is not coincidental.
More importantly it's a technical expression for a mechanical air flow control system, restricting or opening by rotating the system of flat bars which can close, restrict or minimise the obstruction to flow. Widely used for the control of gas turbines, where air is the working fluid.
The american spelling results from the american attempt to 'simplify' the language for the benefit of under-educated americans who were largely 'non-native-english' speakers. This attempt has resulted in additional confusion, as usual.
