When iron and zinc are in contact and the combination is in water containing an "electrolyte" (free ions, as for instance in acid conditions), the zinc will preferentially corrode.

Iron alone, absent the protective coating, would corrode very readily in hostile soil conditions, eg., acid or saline. I am not sure about air being harmful as much...

If metal corrodes, or if something corrodes it, it is slowly damaged by something such as rain or water:

Steel tends to corrode faster in a salty atmosphere.
