My fried wrote to me that '... the marriage went OFF well'. I think, the preposition should be ON instead. Am I wrong?

Idiom -- 5. To happen. Considering all the problems we had beforehand, it's amazing that our party went off so well!

I associate it with a bomb going off alright. I may be wrong.

A wedding-party going off, and a bomb going off can be very similar sometimes . . . Whistle

Ravindra.
It's another one of the 'odd' things which happen in English.

In the continuous sense, we tend to use the idiom "is going on, was going on".
The party's going on right now.
The party went on till five in the morning.

In the 'completed' sense - particularly "completed successfully despite possible difficulties", we use "went off".
"I'm glad the party went off so well."
