The Munich Air Disaster (1958)

In 1958, a British European Airways airliner carrying the Manchester United soccer team along with a number of staff members, supporters, and journalists crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Germany's Munich-Riem airport. Twenty-three of the 44 passengers on board died in the disaster. Sad incident. I was born in 1961, but my father often told me about good MU players who tragically lost their lives back in 1958.

Many of those who died were part of a group known as the "Busby Babes".

Young men from around the Manchester area trained by Sir Matt Busby for Manchester United, it was very sad as they were part of community.
