In the 19th century, monomania was one of seven recognized categories of mental illness. In the midst of twenty century many psychoanalysts believed that many people were dominated by an overly repressive and unforgiving superego, which led to neurotic and harmful guilt. Hobart Mowrer argued that the opposite was true: people suffered from anxiety and neurosis because they repressed guilt over real wrongdoing. Mowrer finally developed "integrity therapy".
