Our past is our identity. If we ignore it, we will fail to understand the present and we will have no control over our future.

It is in fact the only way how people are judged. Only too natural to do so.

I disagree. I hope this quote is from a personage from a Wilde's theatre play, who doesn't realise what he or she is saying, really. If one has made a mistake, one must get a chance to make it better. Or are you lot all in favor of death penalty? Not me.

Context from: An Ideal Husband

Act 1
First Act
SCENE

The octagon room at Sir Robert Chiltern's house in Grosvenor Square.

LADY CHILTERN:

That woman who has just gone out, Mrs. Cheveley, as she calls herself now. She seemed to taunt me with it. Robert, I know this woman. You don't. We were at school together. She was untruthful, dishonest, an evil influence on every one whose trust or friendship she could win. I hated, I despised her. She stole things, she was a thief. She was sent away for being a thief. Why do you let her influence you?

SIR ROBERT CHILTERN:

Gertrude, what you tell me may be true, but it happened many years ago. It is best forgotten! Mrs. Cheveley may have changed since then. No one should be entirely judged by their past.

LADY CHILTERN:

[(sadly.)] One's past is what one is. It is the only way by which people should be judged.

SIR ROBERT CHILTERN:

That is a hard saying, Gertrude!

LADY CHILTERN:

It is a true saying, Robert. And what did she mean by boasting that she had got you to lend your support, your name, to a thing I have heard you describe as the most dishonest and fraudulent scheme there has ever been in political life?

As so often happens, the quote is from a character in a play. However, a person can be judged by their past, but only if they continue to act as they always have in the past, so that their present content of character remains unchanged.

We should look to the past to learn from it, not destroy our future because of it — FounDit

From a legal point of view I don't think past should be ignored of course. Even if you change, you've harmed, and so a punishment must be issued.

But out of the legal context, from an emotional and "essential" point of view, I think it's more relevant what people do at present. For instance, if you were weak in the past but now you're stronger, why judging your character for your past and not your present?

Yeah. One’s past is always someone’s future. The present is always somewhere in between. I don’t know why, but today, it seems so strange to me...
