_______________

The choice of single word substitution will depend on the intended sense in the given sentence. Two words that immediately come to my mind are "slash" and "chop".

Hello, robjen and shureshot.

How about 'axe'.

Quote:
axe verb
(British English)
(US English ax)
1 axe something (informal) (often used in newspapers) to get rid of a service, system, etc. or to reduce the money spent on it by a large amount
Other less profitable services are to be axed later this year.

axe.

'..decrease, chop, axe, diminish, dwindle, shrink, minify are the verbs that cater to your need of a verb. But the appropriate verb will be the one, when we know what 'something' is, in you sentence. IMO

Although not a verb, the word attrition comes to mind;
Attrition is a noun (just as the word axe, which onsen suggested, and slash or chop, which sureshot suggested) also are correct answers. Applause
Here are some definitions:
A reduction or decrease in numbers, size, or strength.
A wearing down or weakening of resistance, especially as a result of continuous pressure or harassment: a war of attrition.
A gradual reduction in work force as when workers retire and are not replaced.

decimate

1. kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of.
"the project would decimate the fragile wetland wilderness"
2. (historical) kill one in every ten of (a group of soldiers or others) as a punishment for the whole group.
