According to legend, there was a large stone that blocked off the entrance to hell. One night, Satan tried to steal the stone; on his way through Cornwall, England, he was intercepted by the Archangel Michael, who forced him to drop the stone and flee. The town where he dropped it was called Helston (from Hellstone). The people of Helston continue to celebrate the Archangel's victory with the Helston Flora Day. The day's festivities include the "Furry dance," which is performed in the streets by men in top hats and women in fancy dresses, and a trip to the woods in search of flowers and leaves. More...

Midday Dance-Dancers Helston Flora


Helston Flora Day 2018
Come into town to watch the amazing Flora Day dances! The town is decorated with bluebells, gorse and laurel leaves gathered locally and is simply bursting wtih colour.

Dancing begins at 7.00am with gentlemen wearing shirts and ties and the ladies in light summer dresses.

The Hal-an-Tow Starts on St John's Bridge at 8:30am, a very lively mummers’ play featuring scenes of St George slaying the Dragon begins cheered on by a crowd dressed in Lincoln green and Elizabethan robes.

The children of the town dance at 9:40am decked out in white clothes and wearing lily of the valley, starting from from Wendron Street .

At midday the formal dance of the day begins with men wearing morning dress and the ladies glowing in magnificent ball gowns and hats.

To round off the day of dancing, the Evening Dance starts from the Guildhall at 5pm.

With all these sights and sounds, and with a fairground by the boating lake, it is a wonderful family day out.
