Hi All
I am confused about what word to use when a person says something in a caring and understanding tone but doesnt mean it. Would the word be patronising or condescending.

thanks!

It would be neither patronizing nor condescending, but insincere.

I was going to throw "insincere" in as well. Or disingenuous. "Dissemble" (1. To disguise or conceal behind a false appearance. 2. To make a false show of; feign) may work too. Unless you are looking for something specifically describing one who feigns compassion. I'd just put everyone under the umbrella of sociopath and be done with it. (just kidding!)

insincere, false, - or colloquially - two-faced, phoney, sham.

Someone is said to be patronising or condescending when they treat others as inferiors.

I agree with the others in this thread that the word "insincere" is the best way to describe such behavior without making unnecessary assumptions about the motives or the character of the person. Most of the other suggestions in this thread include an element of judgment, which may or may not be merited according to case and to taste.

One I haven't seen mentioned yet is the "Concern Troll", someone who repeatedly posts messages on an internet forum that appear to be sympathetic to a particular class of people or cause, but have instead the intention of causing emotional responses, meaningless controversy and general mayhem.
