I've always been interested in languages, and as I've learned I've tried to dig into the history of the words. Like learning about church slavonic and the Russian language. Once you've dug into that history, you begin to see that almost all languages are logical (and beautiful) in that way.

We don't get a lot of lasting snow cover because of the way the Gulf Stream warms our climate.
There are a few places such as the tops of the Cairngorms that do but it's never as good as the Alps and they are so near a Ski industry has never grown here.
We had one Ski jumper in the Olympics, famous as he was so bad Eddie (the Eagle) Edwards.

proqpen,
there are lots of people in Minnesota with Finnish ancestry.

And there are several Concordia Language Villages in Moorhead, Minnesota (not only Finnish).

Ya, we've been to a few of Concordia's International Days. The kids always loved it when they were younger.

JJ -

Afrikaans also uses "Jah-no" - but you have to gauge whether that's a yes or a no.

Also confusing to non-native Afrikaans-speakers!

The latest snow and cold from Siberia is called The Beast from the East in UK, The Snow Cannon in Sweden, and The Siberian Bear in Netherlands. The Finns called it Wednesday.

The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, a week after his first term as President began in 2012:

JJ, I wonder if that's the wandering moose in Winnipeg that died. I can't see licence plates and there are Wendy restaurants all across Canada and the US.

10C here today in Southern Ontario. A few flurries Christmas eve - no snow now. We usually do get what we call a January thaw, but there has not been anything to thaw and 10C is ridiculous for us this time of year.

If course it is nice but....
