Hello all,

I ran into this example, yesterday.

(CNN)-- Had he lived, John F. Kennedy would turn 100 years old on May 29. (my emphasis added)

I wonder why it is not:
Had he lived, John F. Kennedy would have turned 100 years old on May 29.

Could someone, please, explain this?

Both are correct. The original is called "the mixed conditional". You can find examples on this page:

This is my guess.
"Would turn" is used because May 29 is yet to come.
If the date May 29 had passed, "would have turned" would have been appropriate.

I consider only 'would have turned' to be correct in that irrealis condition.

Need other members' input but just wanted to say that this confuses me, too, sometimes. I asked about this some time last year, and the consensus is that in informal speech, people are less fussy.

Here's the thread if you're interested (go to the last paragraph of my question), all the replies are pretty good:

Thanks everyone for your responses.

What would be the correct conditional for a slightly modified example?
3. Had he lived, John F. Kennedy would be 100 years old on May 29.
4. Had he lived, John F. Kennedy would have been 100 years old on May 29.
