When I was a kid I always thought that place was a castle but it's the Black Watch 5th Royal Scots Armoury in Montreal

For me, your comment begs the question: what qualifies a structure as a castle?
Is it based on size? Or the fact that it has turrets and a big gate?

W-e-l-l . . . what it says in the dictionary is:

castle n
1. a fortified building or set of buildings, usually permanently garrisoned, as in medieval Europe
2. any fortified place or structure
3. a large magnificent house, esp when the present or former home of a nobleman or prince
4. (Fortifications) the citadel and strongest part of the fortifications of a medieval town

I suppose it depends on your consideration of "magnificent".

Personally, I wouldn't say that the ones in Hollywood and Death Valley were really 'castles' - though quite often, "Chateau" is translated as "Castle" - the Hearst place definitely seems 'castly'.

Now this one in Lichtenstein looks like a big house, but it's definitely defended - you need a rope and pitons just to get to the front door!

I know that I could've looked it up, but I'm a California girl, and the definition, not to mention the entire concept, is a bit out of my realm, if you will. :)

This one is named, Carolands Chateau.
It doesn't strike me as a castle, but it has 4.5 floors & 98 rooms.
Castle, or no? It's not fortified, unless there might be an electric fence surrounding the grounds.
(The one in Calistoga is 108 rooms, but almost twice as many floors)
Regarding Lichtenstein, how do they go shopping??

Hillsborough, California

@ funny comment about shopping Applause

It is kinda hard on what to say constitutes the building into being a castle for the exception of the obvious medieval ones,I guess some look more like a palace then a castle or vice versa, some are called mansions yet look like castles.

Well, then, that brings up this question: what's the difference between a castle & a palace??
And, hey, shopping is important for food at the least. Maybe they grow their own?

This was no palace, but it was a great dive bar in the middle of the desert...

One of the most towering -- and historically interesting -- castles in Scotland is Glamis Castle. This structure has the claim to fame as being the setting for Shakespeare's "Macbeth," along with being the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (her younger daughter, Princess Margaret, was born here). The surrounding estate is made up of 14,000 acres of gardens, farms and forests.

Dunluce Castle is a crumbling, medieval ruin perched majestically atop a steep, rocky promontory, with a huge sea cave beneath. Close to the northernmost tip of the island of Ireland, the castle, steeped in local legends, is linked to the mainland by a narrow arched footbridge.

While in recent times, the castle has become known for featuring in the HBO series Game of Thrones, visitors to Dunluce have long been captivated by its picturesque beauty.
