One of my favorite French cinema is Les aventuriers( http://amazon.imdb.com/title/tt0061376/ );

Lino Ventura and Joanna Shimkus was battling against,

holding tight at an old castle.

I have no picture of the castle, unluckily.

The Harlech Castle in Wales is said to be the model for McDuck Castle, the seat of McDuck Clan in Scotland.

Suomenlinna, until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands (Kustaanmiekka, Susisaari, Iso-Mustasaari, Pikku-Mustasaari, Länsi-Mustasaari and Långören), and which now forms part of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site and popular with both tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site. Originally named Sveaborg (Fortress of Svea), or Viapori as called by Finns, it was renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still also sometimes known by its original name. In Swedish-speaking contexts, the name Sveaborg is usually used.

The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism. The general responsibility for the fortification work was given to Augustin Ehrensvärd. The original plan of the bastion fortress was strongly influenced by the ideas of Vauban, the foremost military engineer of the time, and the principles of Star Fort style of fortification, albeit adapted to a group of rocky islands.

?? is that it??

um, I see a defensive potential flaw here - climb a tree and you are higher than the roof....

somehow looks more central European than Welsh, to me. Not sure why. Because it is pointy not square, as a technical assessment!

we don't do castles in Iceland, so I will contribute....

Maiden Castle.
not really a castle at all, an iron age hill fort or settlement.
Man, someone parked a wide load!!!

I mean, castles are all about imposing yourself on the landscape, and that has always been a lost cause here...

To carry the cultural theme....wait 350 million years for the volcano to cool down and be eroded... then build a castle on it....

Edinburgh castle.

but there are loads of stunners in Scotland. This has got some atmosphere....

Thanks, thar. Castell Coch is actually a Victorian reconstruction ( by The Marquess of Bute and William Morris ) of Gilbert de Clare's original 13th century castle.

Ah, an arts and crafts castle. Presumably with very stylish wall hangings to keep out those pesky draughts!

reconstruction of a fortified manor house on the site? I know there are lots of English-built castles around Wales, but those are big square military forts- what this one reminds me most of is those central european 'fairy tale' castles, like Neuschwanstein (which I think has already had a picture posted - I'll check)

On my wish to visit list.....

any in North Wales:

Caernarfon Castle - we are not messing about here!

but, we also do them in round...

but if you want serious castle, not a palace and not a fortified house, and not an imposing town defender (or occupier, depending on your point of view...) you need to go to crusader country.:

Krak des Chevaliers

thanks to all Applause Applause
