I believe some people are incapable of hiding their oversized ego. It's a character defect or something. It doesn't matter how they were raised.

Well, it isn't that I so much want to "hang out" with Twain, exchanging witticisms between swigs of beer; I just would like to be able to live during that time...at least for a while.:)

I think the above quote helps us to act "civilized" in a social setting...I don't think that it really matters whether or not the sentiments of caring about others are sincere. Most people realize most people genuinely do not really care. It is a just a nicety that we use that helps to reminds us to not steal each others food...Or allows us to not have to stand guard over it,etc.

'Good breeding' is a rather quaint phrase meaning something akin to 'politeness' which, of course, is a learned skill and little or nothing to do with one's genes (or breeding). I suspect that the prevalent view in MT's time was that it had.
