Oscar Wilde/Quotes

I can resist everything except temptation.

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Always forgive your enemies - nothing annoys them so much.

Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.

The truth is rarely pure and never simple.

What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.

There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken
To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.

Poor nonsense. Is it better to bludgeon people by secret police and army for the sake of a dictator or "monarch"?

Maybe poor nonsense, but not pure nonsense.

The complete quotation from :The essay “The Soul of Man under Socialism,” first published in the Fortnightly Review, February 1891

“All modes of government are failures. Despotism is unjust to everybody...Oligarchies are unjust to the many, and ochlocracies are unjust to the few. High hopes were once formed of democracy; but democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.”

The main enemy of democracy isn't despotism, tyranny or something similar - but hypocrisy: of the people by the people for the people...
