Dear Fellow Learners:

If you do not already know this expression, you may want to learn it. You may want to use it when giving advice to someone.

Mona: How often do you go to a dentist?

Raul: I never go.

Mona: Why not?

Raul: Because I save money by not going.

Mona: Oh, Raul. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish!

Raul: What do you mean?

Mona: If you do not go to a dentist, you will, I agree, save some money (some pennies). But eventually your teeth will give you so much trouble that you will have to spend a lot of dollars ("pounds" in British money) to have them fixed so that you can eat again.

Raul: Thanks for the advice, Mona. Now I understand: It's better to spend $75 twice a year having my teeth cleaned than having to spend $5,000 someday to correct all the problems that will develop during the years that I do not go to the dentist!

(In the United States, dentistry is not free. But many people have dental insurance that helps pay for a large percentage of the bill.)

Betty: The weather will be very cold for several months. I just bought this coat to keep me warm.

Joe: I don't want to spend my money for a coat. So I just bought this sweater for $10. I refuse to spend $50 for a coat.

Betty: Oh, Joe, don't be penny wise, pound foolish. A sweater is not enough in this cold weather. You could catch cold and wind up in the hospital. And since you don't have very good health insurance, you'll end up paying more than $50 for a hospital visit!

Joe: Thanks, Betty. I'll buy that coat today.

Thank you, The Parser, I didn't know that one!

We have a similar saying that goes something like: What is cheap ends up expensive. [free translation]
