Applause! they cried in Pakistan
Clap and cheer as loud as you can
demand at least six Curtain Calls
Stamp your feet in the lower stalls
Shouts of Bravo! and Encore!
Are sure to get the audience more.

It's summer
And it's all white here.
At any hour
The sun remains fierce.

We're too busy
To dance the cha-cha.
It's not so easy
To live in Antarctica.

What is this appellation?
You say constellation.
Virgo and Taurus,
Sagittarius.

We see stars in groups,
but they're not really troops.
Not bundles in facts -
it's just parallax.

Are we still on the same wavelength?
What is your natural frequency?
Are you losing strength?
Don't you get along with me?

Resonance is key.
Let's tune each other.
Let's restore in harmony
And balance our equalizer.

You ask about Earth.
Of synonyms there's no dearth.
Muck and soil
and clay and marl.

And bole and till
and there's more still.
Or did you mean
the planet scene?

"Work and play!", they say...
May I play if I don't work?
Is there anyone I dismay?
Let's have fun in New York!
We'll work another day!

Overt Ones
Rarely keep Mum
Not so for all
Just for some.

Other players hide their hand
and bury their heads into the sand
"You can't see me!"
They think out loud
"For you are up there in the cloud".

I summon angels
And even archangels.
But I must tell you something:
I stay away from their wings.

Why avoid such celestial beauties?
I and others are allergic to feathers.
Is there anything else that bothers?
I don't know. I'm just about to sneeze.

Chaos reigns
on my desk and in my mind,
I'm just not the organised kind.

I start, I stop, I fire-fight
and tho' I try with all my might
I never get tidied up at night.

My colleagues pass my open door
they're off home to work no more
that day or even that weekend
while I keep busy (I just pretend)

Why can't I be much more like they
who know when to call it a day?
I know! I'll make a list I say,
Oh but alas! Chaos reigns in my In-Tray.

Afternoons is an American indie rock band,
Based out of Los Angeles, California.
Don't worry, they're not a gang
And they're not into panspermia.

Though seldom are we consciously aware
Of oxygen in the surrounding air,
We know that if its precious share diminished
We all would be immediately finished.
So let us drink to ambient O2
Which vivifies the atmospheric brew,
And causes vital fuels to ignite,
Providing us with welcome heat and light.

Our character is plainly shown
By the alarm clock that we own.
A sudden loud metallic blast
Appeals to those who live life fast
And need a bell that packs a punch
To get them up in time for lunch
After a night of raucous revels.
They can stand high volume levels.

Those of weaker constitution,
Who sustain from noise pollution
Damage physical and mental,
Like their waking to be gentle.
They prefer a coaxing beep
To terminate their fragile sleep.
Jangling metal gives them hell;
A plastic timepiece suits them well.

A king surveyed his palace,
Attended by his Fool,
And placed a golden chalice
Upon a marble stool.
He asked: "Are all these riches
A blessing or a curse?
Am I beset by witches,
Or something even worse?"

The jester apprehended
The need to soothe his nerves:
"An edifice so splendid
Is what my liege deserves!
The townsman and the peasant
Know not the monarch's cares;
Their work, though not too pleasant,
Is free of state affairs".

The king's misgivings were assuaged.
"A wise reply, forsooth!"
The jester had correctly gauged
His double-sided truth.
The palace, with its huge extent,
Drained royal funds away.
Divine reward, or punishment?
The Fool would never say.

O, fa-la-la and tra-la-la and yo-ho-ho and all –
In happiness the notes ascend; in rueful mood they fall.
The minstrels and the troubadours, the wassailers and waits,
The workers and the children and the priests of ancient dates,
Would use for sundry purposes their lyric vocal cords –
To celebrate the human soul, perhaps, or praise the Lord's.
In arias and ballads and rumbustious martial ditties
We hear the pulse of peace and war, the life of tribes or cities.
In recent times the music hall has blossomed, bloomed and died;
Most modern songs are in-your-face, and strongly amplified.
But nearly all still utilize the diatonic scale;
A song not based on keys or modes is almost bound to fail.
A small minority of folk prefer the avant garde,
But simple tunes are de rigueur for a commercial bard.
