Usually, you say:

(1) You can walk up the stairs.

(2) You can walk down the stairs.

If you don't want to indicate which way to go, can you say:

(3) You can take the stairs.

(4) You can walk the stairs.

Are (3) and (4) OK when you don't want to indicate a direction? Thanks a lot.

We can walk the chief guest to the stage and walk a toddler. We cannot walk the stairs. I agree with Milinad.

It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.

Agreed, don't "walk" the stairs...but you can "use" the stairs.

We don't "walk" the stairs.

We don't usually say "take" the stairs, either, except when specifying the stairs as an alternative:

- "If you don't like elevators, you can take the stairs."
- "The escalator isn't running, so you should take the stairs."

However, we might say:
- "Go in through the front door and take the stairs to the second floor."

Note that "… to the second floor" effectively indicates which way to go, so we don't need to specify "up" or "down".

Also you can use the stairs.
