Much has already been debated about euthanasia from legal, religious, ethical and many other perspectives. One thing I had not considered was brought forward by Marieke Vervoort, a Belgian Paralympic athlete who won a silver medal the other day. Ever since she signed her euthanasia papers in 2008, she has had control over her fate and that seems to have given her the strength to continue, despite "the relentless pain of living with an incurable and degenerative spinal condition".

Quote:
She explained that her papers gave her hope and control.

Her achievements at the paralympics (and her bucket list) are evidence of her love of life and her urge to embrace the options she still has and to push even further. Without the papers and the knowledge that she is in control of her life (and by extension, death), she says she would have committed suicide already.

An interesting way to look at things. But it doesn't take more than a moment to understand, does it?
