In this regard, there's only one tragedy - the inadequate want... Want to make something of it?

Then simply, we are left with the inevitability of having just enough, being ready to dissipate excess, when it accrues and building up when it dwindles.

Okay, Oscar, then we'll settle for winning some and losing some. But not all of the time the grey middle nowhereland.

Oscar loved to be admired for his wit more than he wanted to be deeply philosophical.

Context from the play: LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN

(Lady Windermere’s Fan opened in London on February 20, 1892. It’s a four-act play that satirizes the morals of Victorian society. Throughout it, Wilde takes well-worn dramatic clichés and twists them around to comic purpose.)

Mr. Dumby, Act III.

Lord Darlington. This woman has purity and innocence. She has everything we men have lost.

Cecil Graham. My dear fellow, what on earth should we men do going about with purity and innocence? A carefully thought-out buttonhole is much more effective.

Dumby. She doesn’t really love you then?

Lord Darlington. No, she does not!

Dumby. I congratulate you, my dear fellow. In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it. The last is much the worst; the last is a real tragedy! But I am interested to hear she does not love you. How long could you love a woman who didn’t love you, Cecil?

Cecil Graham. A woman who didn’t love me? Oh, all my life!

Dumby. So could I. But it’s so difficult to meet one.

Lord Darlington. How can you be so conceited, Dumby?

The third tragedy comes after getting what one wanted: getting rid of it.
