Evidence is in the mind of the discoverer, whether it turns out to be right or not.

Descartes recognised that the principles of philosophy should be based on self-evident truths, which are certain for all time and free from doubt and dispute, even as the axioms of mathematics are, from which we can correctly deduce all other truths in a logical order, provided we do not go wrong in our calculation and reasoning. His problem was to find out such a self-evident principle on which to base all further discovery and research.

Now comes the stroke of genius in Descartes. He discovered that though all things may be doubtful, the fact that we doubt is itself not doubtful. The basis of doubt cannot be doubted. There is doubt, thinking; this is certain. And so the existence of the doubter or the thinker, too, must be certain. 'Cogito, ergo sum' concluded Descartes. "I think, therefore, I am." From the fact of thinking it is to be concluded that the thinker is a spiritual being; I am, and I must be essentially spiritual in nature. This knowledge is the only certain one, and it does not come from sense-perception or imagination. Here is the self-evident rational basis for all deduction in philosophy. This is a universal and necessary proposition.

Everything is evident in itself. That is, if it exists, it provides its own evidence of existence. Whether or not we understand it is a different matter altogether, such as the conclusion reached by Swami Krishnananda in monamagda's post.

Concluding that thinking means the thinker is spiritual seems to me to be a false conclusion not based on facts. No, thinking merely means the thinker has an ability the thinker has labeled "imagination", i.e., the ability to create and hold images in the mind. Evidence does not permit taking it farther than this.

The Swami and Descartes both came to an illogical conclusion from their facts.

Hardly everything, in science, in philosophy, even in the objective reality can be self-evident.
Particularly some truth escapes us at any stage of our muddled development.

"There is one basis of science," says Descartes, "one test and rule of truth, namely, that whatever is clearly and distinctly conceived is true."

Provided that everybody's judgment may clearly and distinctly conceive the self-evident truth.
And that's where the trouble starts, since we may have the knowledge but lack the willingness to
understand the obvious, or to admit it.

The self-evidence of the dream is something to dream on about.
